We have obtained information from Tim Fernandes who is a Portfolio Manager at an asset management company.
He shares his experience on how he got into it and became one.
It all started when he was a child - his parents took the money that they received from friends at his baptism and invested it in 10 shares of a company. His parents registered the shares under his name and every 13 weeks the company would send a dividend cheque to their house .Tim started getting curious about what stock actually was and how the company made money which led him to look up its stock price and dividend yield in a newspapers stock tables , by age 8 or 9 he started reading the company's proxy statements and annual reports.
After pursuing his graduation where he majored in Finance and accounting , he applied for research associate roles and learned all about institutional asset management. He worked there for a year and was promoted to Associate Portfolio Manager.
A portfolio manager is a high-level financial analyst who makes executive decisions for a company or client. Portfolio managers pick up a portfolio of stocks , bonds or combination of the two , to make the highest returns for investors given those goals. They order traders to execute the purchase or sale of securities. They huddle with analysts and assistants managers to go over stock picks, optimization of short term instruments like money market securities and their funds alpha rating.


A bachelors degree in finance related fields like accounting , economics ,finance or business administration and a masters degree in business administration or finance is also required to become a portfolio manager.
